About Ethereum classic (ETC)

Launched on July 30, 2015, Ethereum Classic is the original Ethereum blockchain, developed between 2014 and 2015. The mainnet, now referred to as "Ethereum Classic," broke from the network that is now known as "Ethereum" in July of 2016.

The Ethereum Foundation decided to execute a hard fork as a result of the DAO, an organization that had utilized Ethereum's smart contract features, being compromised. All DAO-related transactions were reversed during this hard fork, and the initial smart contract donors were able to take their money back.

The Ethereum Foundation development team continued to maintain the "Ethereum" moniker for the newly formed blockchain following the hard fork. With the remainder of the community, Ethereum remained on the original blockchain, now referred to as "Ethereum Classic."
